"Na noite de terça-feira (14/05) levei-a para consultar no Evangélico, examinaram e viram que o bebê estava com os batimentos cardíacos normais. Então receitaram esse remédio para dores abdominais e mandaram-na para casa. Passei na farmácia, comprei o medicamento e quando chegamos em casa dei para ela", explicou Antônio, em entrevista ao Repórter Sassá, da Rádio Difusora.

Mother's Day second-line shooting on Frenchmen Street injures at least 17 people

A Mother's Day second-line shooting on Frenchmen Street in the 7th Ward, on Sunday about 2 p.m., left about 17 people injured, according to the latest NOPD numbers. Earlier Sunday afternoon NOPD Superintendent Ronald Serpas said that about 12 people had been injured, but NOPD spokeswoman Remi Braden said at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday that the toll had grown to 17 people because some victims initially hadn't reported being injured.

Bystanders comfort a shooting victim while awaiting EMS at the intersection of Frenchmen and N. Villere Streets after gunfire injured at least a dozen people, including a child, at a Mother's Day second-line parade on Sunday, May 12, 2013

The shooting, in which a girl reportedly was grazed on her side by a bullet, occurred in the 1400 block of Frenchmen Street at the intersection of North Villere Street. The girl, who was 9 or 10 years old, appears to be in stable condition, Braden said.

"In fact, many of the victims were grazed, some by bullets that ricocheted," Braden said in an email. "At this point, there are no fatalities, and most of the wounds are not life-threatening.

"But all medical conditions are not known at this time as victims were rushed to nearby hospitals," Braden continued. "Detectives are conducting interviews, retrieving any surveillance video in the area and, of course, collecting all evidence. This is an extremely unusual occurrence, and we're confident that we will make swift arrests."

A NOLA.com | Times-Picayune reporter was participating in the Mother's Day second line in the area when the shooting occurred, and heard six to seven shots fired.

Serpas said that in addition to about 12 people injured by gunshots, at least one person was injured in a fall during the ensuing commotion. Serpas said three to four people are in surgery, but he said he did not know their conditions.

Shermaine Tyler, 32, who lives on Villere Street about a block from Frenchmen, was celebrating Mother's Day about a block away. Balloons dangled there, and Mother's Day cards were spread out for the holiday.

"Me and mom were going to the second line. I told her I didn't want to go because there are always shots at a second line," Tyler said. "And the second I heard shots, I heard shots fired, we ran outside and one man fell in my lap who had been shot."

She said the man who fell in her lap had been shot in his groin area and once in his hand.
.
"This is all ridiculous. We all bleed the same blood. We all come from the same God," Tyler said. "Everyone is getting shot, and for what?"

While Serpas said there were about 300 to 400 people participating in the Mother's Day second line, about 200 people apparently were in the area of the shooting at the time. Serpas said about 10 NOPD officers were spread throughout the second line. He said three people were seen running from the shooting scene.

Also on Villere, a 59-year-old woman who didn't want to publicly give her name, said she was inside her home, about to go outside to see the parade, when she heard shots ring out.

She said that from her porch she saw hundreds of people scattering, running.

"It's sad that people can't gather together and celebrate," she said. "You don't just go into a crowd and fire into a group of innocent people."

Adriana Stewart, who lives in the area, marched in the second line.

"This was my first time taking my kids to the second line," Stewart said. "It is not fair to the mother or the kids. It is just ridiculous."

Stewart said the second liners were throwing teddy bears and candy to revelers who had lined up to watch.

Serpas said the three gunmen likely worked together, and at least two different weapons were used. One of the suspects is described as a man between 18 and 22 years old with short hair and wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, Serpas said.

The New Orleans coroner said no fatalities have been reported from the shooting.

The Original Big 7 Social Aid and Pleasure Club organized the second line and has held it on Mother's Day since 2001, according to Edward Buckner, the club's president. The parade started Sunday about 1 p.m. at the Original Big 7's home at 1825 Elysian Fields Ave.

Buckner said the parade was started "to celebrate the women of America in New Orleans for the hard time that they have taking care of children, taking care of everyone."

"I can't tell you what the gunmen looked like. I was busy parading. So, you know, I didn't see it coming," Buckner said. "Everyone was just busy having a good time.

"My feelings are hurt for the victims, and the club sends our sympathies and we hope that each of the families know that we wish them a speedy recovery," Buckner said. "We hope that the people who were shot don't stop being fans of the Big 7, because it wasn't anything that they did or the club did, it was just a random act of violence.

"It's not because of the associated pleasure clubs that this type of terrorist act happens. That's not the type of crowd that follow us. We have people as old as 70, and as young as 5" years old who parade, said Buckner, adding that a shooting had never occurred at their Mother's Day second line before.

Firefighter gets utility bills for home that burned down in Hurricane Sandy

All that’s left of this firefighter’s Breezy Point home after Hurricane Sandy is this empty lot — but that hasn’t stopped the clueless folks at LIPA and National Grid from slapping him with monthly utility bills that now total $1,605.
SHOCK: No home, no meter, but firefighter Kieran Burke yesterday shows some of the many LIPA bills that keep coming for this empty spot.

“It’s another knife in my back!” fumed the FDNY’s Kieran Burke, a married father of two sons who grew up at 8 Irving Walk — which was incinerated during the storm.

“It’s infuriating. LIPA burned my house down because of their negligence. Now they’re sending these bills out as if nothing ever happened,” said Burke, 40.

About 120 Breezy Point homes were burned to the ground during Sandy because LIPA failed to turn off the power during the storm surge, 120 homeowners said in lawsuit notices filed in January.

Burke eventually got his electric and gas service turned off, but he kept getting bills.

As of April 7, his LIPA bills have totaled $772 since Sandy; his National Grid gas bills have hit $833.

The charges were based on estimated readings for meters — that were fried in the blaze.

“They’re not doing the actual readings because the meters don’t exist,” Burke fumed.

Burke called a LIPA rep, who seemed oblivious to the devastation at Breezy Point.

“The operator had no idea that these homes had burned down and could not offer an explanation why these bills continued to come,” Burke said.

A supervisor assured Burke that he wouldn’t have to pay.

But a week later, he got yet another National Grid gas tab for the April billing period.

Burke may not be alone.

The lawyer who filed notice of claims against LIPA said he’s heard similar complaints from other area residents.

“At some point, you just have to laugh or you’ll drive yourself crazy. But it’s certainly pouring salt in their wounds,” said Keith Sullivan.

Burke, his wife Jennifer, 40, and sons, Kieran James, 2, and infant Matthew Patrick Burke, have bounced around in hotel rooms and have only recently landed a rental in Yonkers.

But LIPA and National Grid managed to track them down, sending bills to a temporary postal-box address in New Jersey.

After The Post contacted National Grid and LIPA yesterday, the companies admitted fault.

“Everything should be cleared up as of today,” a LIPA spokeswoman said.

Burke remained skeptical, saying, “I’ll believe it when the bills stop coming.”

Sampson’s spy in feds’ office

A pal of state Sen. John Sampson who worked in the Brooklyn US Attorney’s Office didn’t hesitate when Sampson asked him to become a mole — and quickly sought secret information to help the pol, legal papers claim.

Sampson talked to supervisory paralegal Samuel Noel in either August or September 2011, and asked him for insid info about activities of Brooklyn federal prosecutors.

“When Noel met Sampson, Sampson asked Noel, in substance, whether Noel knew if Sampson’s name had come up in an investigation being conducted by the [US Attorney’s Office],” the papers claim.

That investigation was of a Sampson legal client named Edul “Eddie” Ahmad, a businessman who was under investigation for mortgage fraud.

“Noel responded in substance that he did not know the answer, but would attempt to find out,” the legal papers say.

The papers also disclosed that Noel, 46, became a cooperating witness for prosecutors investigating the Brooklyn senator after his activities were discovered.

Last September, Noel secretly pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of accessing a Justice Department computer in 2011 to help Sampson, according to the papers.

Noel, who is free on $25,000 bond, has yet to be sentenced.

The explosive documents had been sealed since last year after prosecutors told a judge that revealing Noel’s cooperation “would jeopardize” ongoing investigations.

Prosecutors moved to unseal the documents yesterday on the heels of an indictment Monday against the ex-Senate minority leader, which accuses Sampson of embezzling $440,000 from escrow accounts he supervised and obstruction of justice.

Sampson allegedly used some of the money to finance his 2005 primary challenge against Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes.

At one point, Sampson had asked Noel to learn the names of five other people were cooperating in the Ahmad case, one filing said.

According to the indictment, the senator had told Ahmad that if he learned the names of potential witnesses against the businessman, Sampson could arrange to “take them out.”

Meanwhile, Brooklyn federal Judge Jack Weinstein ordered the unsealing of court records that reveal the identities of seven elected officials secretly taped and photographed by disgraced ex-state Sen. Shirley Huntley of Queens at the direction of prosecutors.

But Weinstein delayed the unsealing to give prosecutors until today to appeal that decision.

Chad Washington, 19, was arrested yesterday over the incident early Sunday morning.

He grabbed a 19-year-old Asian man on West 113th Street and made ethnic slurs while threatening to pummel him, police said.

Washington, who is black, is a 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive lineman.

In an op-ed piece he once wrote for the Columbia Spectator, he said he had a 3.0 grade-point average.

Washington, who made 15 tackles last year, was charged with aggravated harassment as a hate crime.
